The Galata Tower

After the Bosphorus Cruise, I decided to go up the Galata Tower, which I could see on the Europe side, north of the Golden Horn waterway.

I walked over the Galata bridge, and then a few blocks up to the Tunel, a "funicular," which is a short tram up a very steep hill.

I could not see the tower when I emerged, and walked through the neighborhood, asking shop owners where the tower was.

Eventually I came around a corner and found it!

An elevator ride, followed by a narrow winding staircase, and I emerged to an amazing 360 degree view.
The water in the foreground is the Bosphorus Strait, the background water is the Marmara Sea, the Aya Sofya is on the left with the four minarets, and the Blue Mosque is seen to the right with its six minarets.

This is the aerial view of the Galata Bridge over the Golden Horn.  The center of the bridge is a lift section, but the two ends are double deckered, with fish restaurants on the lower level in the blue, red and white sections.

Back down the narrow spiral staircase, and then the elevator...

I walked down to the bridge rather than trying to find the Funicular (Tunel) again, and then took a ferry from Karakoy (on the north end of the Galata Bridge) to Kadikoy, where I took the Metro back to near the hotel.  I feel pretty savvy at getting around now!  This is day 9 in Istanbul!

Another day, another adventure.  Two more days to sightsee, and we fly home on Friday afternoon.

Good night!
