Day One Part One

Internet here is not so hot.  I've spent hours trying to upload photos.  Here is a small piece of Monday - Day One.

We started in our hotel lobby, planning the day with my guide, Guzin.

We took a mini bus that picked up near the hotel.  Slow due to traffic, but one inexpensive option to get to the shore.

We took a boat to the Europe side, and then went right to Taksim Square - to the heart of the protests.  Blame Guzin -  I was just along for the ride.  It was peaceful but sad.  Signs and graffiti everywhere, and protesters in tents awaiting the evening row.  According to Guzin, the original protest to save the trees and park has escalated with many who simply want to cause trouble and deface the Public Square.  Sad.

This last photo is of a police car burned in retaliation for the excessive force used with tear gas and water cannons

Taksim Square attaches to Istiklal Caddesi.  It is a long promenade which is shoulder to shoulder most days.  Due to the unrest the Nostalgic Tram was not running - sad.  So we walked the 3 km to the Tunel - a funicular (underground tram) that saves walking a steep embankment.

More later...must scoot.  But I will leave you with an image of an ingenious sidewalk sandwich.  Fish and chips all in one!

Ciao for now!  -g

  2. I've heard that the police raided Taksim again tonight to clear the protesters. Such a hard reality, and hoping that more unrest does not break out. Pray for peace in Turkey.

  3. Grace, love your blog! I feel like I'm getting a vacation too. Do think you ought to suggest the all-in-one fish/chips to our "truck Tuesday" vendors. :)
